Proton
X50.
Proton's compact crossover, born of the Geely Coolray. Turbo-charged, value-priced, and the bestseller in its class.
▌ Overview
The Proton X50 launched in 2020 as the second product of Proton's Geely partnership, sharing its bones with the global Geely Coolray. Locally assembled at Proton's Tanjung Malim plant in Perak, it became the best-selling B-segment SUV in Malaysia within months of launch.
Two powertrains are offered: a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo (150 hp) on the Standard, Executive, and Premium trims, and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo (177 hp) on the Flagship. Both pair with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Flagship is the choice for performance — 0–100 in 7.9 seconds, quicker than its German rivals at twice the price.
Where it shines: aggressive pricing, generous equipment (wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, ADAS on top trims, panoramic roof), and 5-star ASEAN NCAP. Where it suffers: DCT lurchiness in stop-go traffic, mediocre service network outside Klang Valley, and resale value below the Japanese segment leaders.
