Honda
City.
The B-segment sedan that taught Malaysia what "good enough" looks like. Locally built, hybrid available, surprisingly mature.
▌ Overview
The Honda City has been a fixture of Malaysian roads for decades. Honda Malaysia took over local assembly with the 4th generation in 2008 at the Pegoh, Melaka plant — the same line the Civic uses. Today's 7th generation (GN, 2020—) shares its DNA with the Civic and was the first to bring a true hybrid powertrain to its segment.
Two powertrains are available: a 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol with a CVT (121 hp) and an e:HEV hybrid that pairs the same block with two electric motors for a combined system output of 109 hp. The hybrid is markedly more refined under load and returns around 25 km/L combined — better than most subcompacts. Honda Sensing is standard across the range.
The interior outdoes the Vios and Almera for material feel; rear legroom is class-leading. Where it loses points: the petrol's CVT is uninspiring at high load, and the hybrid commands a premium worth thinking through against the segment-above Civic.
